IMG_3150It’s a great dog’s life!!

It’s unbelievable but true doggie beer (non-alcoholic of course) is on the shelf here at the Three Greyhounds Inn. Pet dogs are welcome in our ‘Brandy Snug’ named after our famous collection of some 50 brandies of all different styles!! There are the usual Dog biscuits on the bar (supplied by our local Dogs kennel ‘WAGS’) as you would expect but now for only £1.50 your ‘pooch’ can have a little beverage with you!! Doggie beer is made up of meat stock and is certainly lapped up. Sometimes the bottle is nearly as big as the dog as you can see!!

Shakerley Mere the picturesque lake is opposite the Three Greyhounds Inn and is well worth a walk with your the dog before you arrive at our pub. Walk leaflets for this are available here on our website or from within the pub itself.

We also have a large garden at the side of our pub which is ideal in the spring and summer months for your respective hounds..just venture through the Brandy Snug and through the French windows and you are there!

A fun Christmas everywhere!!

What a great time over Christmas our teams have had. It is tiring work but there are plenty of smiles and fun around the place!! The Bulls Head in Mobberley held its annual Christmas Jumper competition and the judges moved around the pub secretly assessing the best. Pete had won it last year with his ‘snow man number’ so was a favourite again this year.

There were a number of good efforts but I am pleased to say Pete held on to his crown with an ‘elf jumper’ with matching hat!! Well done Pete! There must be someone out there who can out do Pete in 2014??!

The teams as you can see had a good go with our personal favourite being Tom at the Church Inn with his Christmas pudding version!! Thanks to all our teams for making the effort. At the Cholmondeley Arms the ‘Snow Ball’ Drink was re-incarnated by the team and you can see Miya sampling some for the camera behind the Cholmondeley Bar!!!

Thank you to all our customers who have added to the atmosphere at all our pubs. There have been Christmas Carol singers at Cholmondeley and Brass bands at The three Greyhounds Inn at Allostock and The Church Inn in Mobberley as we managed to squeeze them in our newly decorated Church Inn ‘boot room’.

On Christmas eve as the Carol service finished at St. Wilfs church opposite the Church Inn in Mobberley we were on hand to serve the masses (get it!!) with mulled wine on the terrace with warm chimineas  burning away. There were festive nibbles and roasted chestnuts and a lot of good cheer! A very happy Christmas to all!!

Thanks to all our teams for working so hard!!

ALLOSTOCK PUB WINS BEST FOOD PUB IN NATIONAL AWARDS

The Three Greyhounds Inn in Allostock has beaten off competition from 1300 other pubs to be named Best Food Pub in national awards run by Heineken owned Star Pubs & Bars this week.

Noting the pub’s busy car park, the judges were impressed by how quickly owners Tim Bird and Mary McLaughlin had established the pub as a great place to eat within just a year of re-opening. Describing it as a ‘shining light’, they also singled out the distinctive menu with its focus on food from British farms.

Indeed it was the opportunity to offer food at the Three Greyhounds Inn that attracted Tim and Mary to take on the pub and to invest £250,000 restoring it into a beautiful traditional pub serving excellent locally sourced food. “The pub had been shut for four months and was in a sad state when we first saw it,” recalls Tim. “But it had real character and as the only pub in the Allostock area was crying out for some TLC and to be turned back into a pub that the local community could be proud of.”

The 300-year-old pub’s history as a farm inspired Tim and Mary with the menu theme. The menu is a celebration of food from British farms with as much produce as possible from meat and vegetables to ice cream and chutney coming from Cheshire farms. For an added twist, the pub also specialises in British farm cheeses and offers a choice of eight brandies produced on a Somerset farm.

“We’ve been surprised and delighted by the variety of wonderful food being produced on Cheshire farms, from chocolate to asparagus, the quality is excellent,” says Tim.

The Three Greyhounds landlord James Griffiths received the coveted award at a gala celebration night from snooker champion John Parrott. “We’re humbled but very proud to have been selected to win the award. We didn’t seek the nomination which made winning a great surprise and a real boost for our 25 staff and 5 chefs. Some people think that rundown pubs are a lost cause, this award helps us prove there will always be a place for a well-cared for traditional community local.”

Tim and Mary are not resting on their laurels after their win, with plans for a private dining room, guest bedrooms and a regular farmers market at the Three Greyhounds Inn on the cards.

Best Picture finally chosen!!

It was felt that the photo captured the scenery and wildlife of the Mere and had a great deal of feeling attached to it.

So the first prize for Sally and her family to enjoy is £50 of Three Greyhounds Inn vouchers and a cheese and wine hamper!!

Thank you to everyone who sent a photo in.

More history unfolds about the Three Greyhounds Inn

We have been visited by Janet and Andy all the way from Buckingham. They have been investigating their ancestors and have found that one of them took over the Three Greyhounds Inn way back in 1843. As is recorded below with sketches and a copy of an entry from the family tree, a man called Peter Taylor took over as landlord of the Three Greyhounds from his deceased brother Joseph, having married Joseph’s widow.

This historical record confirms what we, here at the Three Greyhounds Inn had guessed, that the pub and farmland belonged to aristocracy and now it is confirmed within this record, that this was Sir Charles Peter Shakerley, (as in Shakerley Mere) who was the 1st Baronet no less!! We now have Sir Nicholas Simon Adam Shakerley, 7th Baronet (born 1963) in situ. So 7 generations later!!

Sir Charles Peter Shakerley 1st Bt., of Somerford Park, born 27 Dec. 1792, was educated at Brasenose, Oxford and was Sheriff of Chester in 1837. He was created Baronet on 30 July 1838. He married firstly 26 Feb. 1819 to Laure Angelique Rosalba d’Avaray, daughter of the Duke (Ormerod describes him as the Marquis) D’Avaray. This marriage ended in divorce and Peter then married on 20 December 1831 to Jessie Matilda (died 8 Aug. 1902) the daughter of James Scott of Rotherfield Park, Hampshire and had issue. Sir Charles died 14 Sept. 1857 and was succeeded by his eldest son Charles Watkin Shakerley.

As this account details the Three Greyhounds came with 70 acres of land, various outbuildings and crops. A small rent was paid to the local vicar and more to Sir Charles …some £7, 7 Shillings and 3 pence to be exact. How times have changed!!

The sketches confirm that our out buildings were once farm houses and show the piggeries that still exist in our garden today.

Big thanks to Janet and Andy for sharing their ancestors history with us. Anyone else that can help with the history of our pub please let us know.
